I founded The Groove Syndicate because I believe learning to play drums can teach you far more than simply being able to play them.
Of course, you'll learn to play drums here. I'll teach you the fundamentals, help you develop your skills, and give you the tools to become the drummer you want to be. But I believe the real value of learning an instrument goes much deeper.
Randy Pausch, the inspirational Carnegie Mellon professor and author of The Last Lecture, called this the “head fake”—you think you're learning one thing, while you're actually learning something much more important.
That's what I want to create at The Groove Syndicate.
You come here to learn drums, but, along the way, you learn how to work toward something that doesn't come easily. You learn to be patient when progress is slow, to accept feedback, to work through frustration, and to keep going until you can do something you couldn't do before.
Those aren't just lessons for a drummer. They're lessons for life.
There are no shortcuts to mastery in any subject. On drums, you can't wish for speed. You can't wish for control. You can't wish for groove. Nobody can groove for you.
And that’s where the real work begins. You gotta believe. You gotta want it. You gotta earn it. And you gotta grind until you get there.
That's the deeper lesson I hope you'll discover: the satisfaction of earning something through your own effort—and realizing that the same process can take you far beyond the drum set.
You may come to The Groove Syndicate to learn drums.
You may leave knowing how to pursue mastery.
